Foodmart is a speculative conceptual project which invites you to challenge your perspective on the value of everyday food items admist the current global food crisis. The World Economic Forums' 2023 Global Risks Report cites cost of living as the most pressing global risk for the next two years, driven by COVID-19, climate challenges, inflation and geopolitical conflicts like the Ukraine war. With around two billion people suffering from malnutrition, experts predict that we will need 60% more food to feed the world population by 2050. Food futurologists and the United Nations warn of a future where food becomes prohibitively expensive, and some foods may become rare. Over the last century, over 90% of crop varieties have vanished, and more recently the UK experienced severe shortages of eggs, fruit, and vegetables.

An unearthed Sainsbury's receipt from 2001, reveals that a crate of six eggs cost just 39 pence. Today, those same eggs will now cost you at least £1.40, indicating an alarming inflation rate of 259%. Using our innovative projector below, we invite you to explore the future value and cost of these eggs, visualised through a decreasing quantity of pixels which symbolise its decline in availability.
